Comparing University Programmes in Japan: Six Checks Before You Apply

Two courses with similar titles may lead to very different study experiences. Use this checklist once you have chosen a Japan study route. It is a comparison method, not a ranking or a list of endorsed institutions.

1. Confirm the award and study status

The Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) school-type overview is a starting point, not a substitute for a programme’s current documents. Its graduate-school guide distinguishes degree study from non-degree research-student status. Write the exact qualification and status at the top of each comparison sheet.

2. Verify the teaching language

Official university guidance describes English-taught options alongside Japanese-language study. Do not infer that an English marketing page means every required module, placement or assessment is in English. Ask the programme team to confirm the current curriculum and language evidence required for your intake.

3. Read what you will actually study

Our suggested comparison: choose three important modules or research areas and explain how each supports your goal. For research study, ask how supervision is arranged. For a professional goal, check recognition with the relevant authority rather than assuming a university name settles it.

4. Map the admission process

Record the actual application route, document list, assessment stages, deadline and intake. Keep the date you downloaded the instructions. If two official pages disagree, ask the university to resolve the difference before relying on either version. A directory entry is a lead, not confirmation that the course is currently recruiting.

5. Compare the complete cost

University charges

Request current tuition, application and other compulsory charges, together with payment and refund conditions.

Living and transition costs

Build your own budget for housing, deposits, travel, everyday expenses and an emergency margin. Keep unconfirmed funding separate.

6. Check the support you will need

Ask about housing guidance, disability or learning support, orientation, language support and practical placement arrangements where relevant. Put unanswered questions in a separate column instead of filling gaps with assumptions.

Our recommended final sheet has five columns: question, programme A, programme B, source URL and unresolved point. Compare two or three realistic options in enough detail to explain why you prefer one. These are editorial planning suggestions; only the university and relevant authorities can confirm course-specific admission or recognition.
