Use NIC-Japan’s official institution search to check whether a Japanese higher-education institution is recognised. Then verify the exact course and qualification separately.
The key points
- Start here
- National Information Center for Academic Recognition Japan (NIC-Japan), the official recognition-information service.
- Search by
- Institution name, institution type, qualification and prefecture. Remove old filters if a result is missing.
- Check in the record
- Current name, institution type, qualification, official website and any closure/name-change notes.
- What it does not settle
- Course fit, professional licensing, admission, funding or recognition by another country or employer.

Check the institution, then the course
Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) points readers to NIC-Japan for checking recognised universities. The directory distinguishes universities and graduate schools from other types of higher-education institutions; the type of qualification matters.
- Copy the institution’s exact Japanese and English names from its own website. Search without a prefecture or qualification filter first.
- Compare the record’s official website and address with the offer or advertisement you received. A similar name is not enough.
- Read any closure or name-change note. NIC-Japan retains some closed-institution records, so a search result alone is not confirmation that new admissions are available.
- Open the institution’s own current programme page. Confirm the awarding institution, credential, campus, teaching language and entry cycle.
If the result is missing or unclear
The list has defined coverage and source dates, and does not contain every closure or name change. Clear filters, try alternative names and ask NIC-Japan or the relevant authority before drawing conclusions. Absence alone is not proof of fraud.
Our final check: if you need the qualification for a regulated profession or further study abroad, ask the receiving regulator, employer or university about that exact award. Institutional recognition in Japan does not automatically answer those separate questions. Save the source record and the date you checked it.
