Arriving to Study in Tokyo: Plan the Airport-to-Accommodation Journey

Before booking your journey to student accommodation, check the airport, terminal, last practical connection and housing check-in time. The cheapest flight is not necessarily the lowest-cost arrival.

The key points

Airports
Check your booking: Narita and Haneda have different terminals and transport routes.
Transport
Use the airport’s current rail, bus and taxi guidance, then check the operator’s timetable and conditions.
Budget
Compare the complete journey, including connections, luggage, late-night alternatives and any first-night accommodation. No live fare comparison is claimed here.
Housing
Confirm the exact address, key collection and latest check-in time with the accommodation provider.
Late arrival
Make a confirmed backup plan. A terminal being open does not mean public transport or a room is available all night.

Build the journey backwards

  1. Start with the accommodation address and key-collection deadline. Save the contact number and address offline, including the Japanese version if provided.
  2. Check your flight’s airport and terminal. Allow realistic time for immigration, baggage and moving to the transport stop.
  3. Compare the current airport routes with your destination, transfer needs and luggage. Verify the service date, last departure, ticket conditions and any reservation requirement with the operator.
  4. Choose a backup before departure: an authorised pickup, a suitable later service or a confirmed first-night booking. Do not assume availability on arrival.

What the airport guidance confirms

Narita’s official access guide links rail, bus, taxi and terminal-transfer information. Its night guidance says terminal areas have different access hours and warns that facilities and business hours can change. The capsule hotel linked to Terminal 2 can fill up; advance booking is recommended. Haneda provides its own train/monorail, bus and inter-airport guidance.

Our recommendation: compare door-to-door cost and arrival time, not only the first ticket price. Check whether a late arrival would miss key collection or require another paid transfer. Share your arrival plan with the accommodation contact without posting private booking details publicly.

This is a planning guide, not a transport booking service or a claim that a particular flight, train or bus is cheapest. Recheck schedules shortly before travel and after any flight change.
