UNESCO has outlined its next major sustainability-education conference, but it is not a general funded-student application call. Here is what readers should distinguish before making plans.

The confirmed plan

UNESCO’s 20 October 2026 briefing says the World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is scheduled for Nairobi, Kenya, on 13–15 January 2027. It will review progress since 2021 and discuss the next phase of the ESD for 2030 framework.

A Nairobi Consensus is an expected outcome, not a document already adopted. Participation includes government delegations, selected organisations and nominated young people. The partner proposal call closed on 31 August 2026, and youth selection is complete. The briefing describes narrowly limited financial support for eligible ministerial representatives, not travel funding for every interested student.

What students should do with this information

Follow the substance

Use the conference to identify questions about sustainability in your own education: what is taught, practised and assessed?

Check access separately

Do not assume that interest, a social-media invitation or a conference listing establishes admission or funding.

Our suggested preparation

  • Choose one concrete issue on your campus, such as waste, energy use or a curriculum gap. Record what you have observed without presenting guesses as measured results.
  • Look for the relevant department or student group before proposing a project. Ask what work already exists and how students can contribute.
  • If you hope to attend an event, verify the organiser’s current registration, eligibility and costs before booking travel.
  • After the conference, look for the actual adopted outcomes. Do not cite an expected declaration as an existing agreement.

The official conference hub is the appropriate place to follow practical updates. This report does not establish an individual right to attend, volunteer or receive support.

Our campus-project suggestions are editorial guidance. They do not imply UNESCO sponsorship, institutional partnership or guaranteed participation.
