The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) has opened applications for its International Research Training Program Scholarship (IRTP) for international students seeking a PhD or Master’s by Research beginning in Research Session 2 of 2027. The scholarship is competitive and is intended for newly commencing research students with strong academic achievement and research potential.
What the UTS IRTP scholarship covers
According to the current UTS scholarship page, the award provides:
- Tuition-fee support for up to 3.5 years for a PhD or two years for a Master’s by Research.
- A living allowance for the same supported period. UTS lists the rate commencing 1 January 2026 as AUD 40,500 per year, tax-free.
- Standard Overseas Student Health Cover for the scholarship holder and, where applicable, their spouse and dependants for the duration of the program.
The university’s formal offer and conditions of award determine the final value and duration for each recipient.
Who may be eligible?
Applicants must satisfy all UTS admission and scholarship rules. The official scholarship page says that an applicant must:
- Be an overseas student undertaking an accredited higher degree by research at UTS in the year of the scholarship.
- Have their enrolment into a postgraduate research program accepted by the university.
- Not receive an equivalent award, stipend or salary worth more than 75% of the IRTP stipend for undertaking the research degree. Income unrelated to the course is treated separately under the published rule.
- Not receive another equivalent Commonwealth award designed to offset higher-degree-by-research fees.
Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an award. UTS assesses competitive scholarship applications using factors including academic qualifications, relevant experience, research outputs, alignment with faculty priorities and the quality of the research proposal.

There is no separate IRTP application form for prospective students. New research applicants should complete the UTS research-degree application and select Yes in the scholarship or sponsorship section so they can be considered for IRTP and associated research scholarships.
How to apply
- Review the IRTP eligibility rules and UTS research-degree entry requirements.
- Identify the appropriate research program and complete any required pre-application or faculty process.
- Prepare every required academic, English-language and research document.
- Complete the UTS application for a PhD or Master’s by Research.
- Select “Yes” in the scholarship or sponsorship section to request consideration for IRTP and associated scholarships.
- Submit the complete application by 7 October 2026. Incomplete or late scholarship applications will not be considered.
